Former Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins has advised Samuel Chukwueze to consider leaving Italian giants AC Milan if he wishes to revive his club form and secure a regular place in Nigeria’s national team. The 25-year-old winger, who joined the Rossoneri from Villarreal in the summer of 2023, has struggled to make a lasting impact in Serie A, raising concerns about his future at both club and international levels.
Chukwueze arrived at AC Milan amid much fanfare, following an impressive stint at Villarreal where he dazzled fans with his pace, dribbling skills, and ability to unlock defenses. However, his transition to Italian football has been far from smooth. Since joining the seven-time UEFA Champions League winners, Chukwueze has managed just four goals in 47 Serie A appearances. A combination of limited playing time, tactical misfits, and fierce competition for starting spots has seen his confidence take a hit and his role in the squad diminish.

Speaking on the winger’s current situation, Martins, who himself enjoyed a storied club career in Europe and Asia and was a regular feature for the Super Eagles in his prime, expressed concern over Chukwueze’s diminishing influence at both club and country levels. According to the ex-Newcastle United and Inter Milan striker, regular playing time is non-negotiable for players aspiring to maintain a foothold in the national team setup.
“The Saudi Pro League is becoming increasingly competitive. If a good offer comes along, why not?” Martins said in an interview with Africa Foot. “The main thing is for him to play and become a regular starter again. Rhythm and confidence are essential for him.”

Martins noted that Chukwueze’s lack of match sharpness has become glaring when he puts on the green and white jersey of Nigeria. His inconsistent performances in recent international games have drawn criticism from fans and pundits alike, with many questioning whether his club struggles are beginning to take a toll on his confidence and overall impact on the pitch.
“His decline in form at club level is reflected in his performances with the Super Eagles,” Martins continued. “He absolutely must regain his rhythm if he wants to continue to be a driving force for Nigeria. A transfer is a necessity if he wants to retain his place and perform well in the national team.”

Indeed, Chukwueze’s statistics at Milan contrast sharply with his productive years at Villarreal. While at the La Liga club, he enjoyed regular football and contributed significantly in key matches — notably his standout performance against Real Madrid in the 2022/2023 season. In Italy, however, his role has been reduced to that of a fringe player, often coming off the bench or being excluded from key matchday squads altogether.
With the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament and the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on the horizon, the stakes have never been higher for Chukwueze. Nigeria’s attacking options are growing deeper, with the likes of Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, and Victor Boniface all staking their claims for starting positions. As a result, Chukwueze can ill afford another season on the sidelines.

A move away from AC Milan may offer the reset he desperately needs. While Europe’s top leagues remain an ideal destination, Martins’ mention of the Saudi Pro League reflects the growing trend of African players exploring the Middle East in search of regular football and renewed form. The league has recently attracted high-profile talents with competitive wages and improving standards, making it a viable alternative.
Still just 25, Chukwueze has plenty of time to rediscover his best form and return to the heights that once made him one of Nigeria’s most promising young stars. A change in environment, tactical freedom, and regular playing time could all work in his favor.
What’s Next for Chukwueze?

The summer transfer window will be a crucial turning point in the career of Samuel Chukwueze. With limited time to impress at Milan and the pressure mounting from the national team, his next move must be strategic and focused on long-term development. Whether he opts for a fresh start in another European league or takes Martins’ advice and explores new challenges in the Saudi Pro League, one thing is clear: staying on the bench at AC Milan is no longer an option if he wants to play a leading role for the Super Eagles.
In the meantime, all eyes will be on Chukwueze and his agents as they navigate the complex football transfer market, hoping to make the right decision that benefits both his career and Nigeria’s national team ambitions.
